![]() Alexander was diagnosed with two types of leukemia when he was 11 years old. The type of cancer was going to demand a lot of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. Undergoing all the chemotherapy made him very ill, which in turn reduced his immune system further causing infection to set in. Because his immune system was in jeopardy, he would be confined to his bedroom where he would receive his I.V. treatment. When he felt well enough he was also tutored in his room. With 4 younger siblings in the house, he had to be completely confined, as a cold could be very dangerous for him. Alex's room was pleasant, but with all the medications and I.V.s being given, and his numerous allergies, his room needed some improvements to help him heal and recover. Alex is passionate about lego building, trains, and fighter planes. His wish was for a train to travel around the top of his room, a place to show off his lego masterpieces, and fighter planes to look as if they were flying around his ceiling. To create a healing space to rest and recover we included each of the above elements to his room. We were also able to install a beautiful wood floor to make it easier for him to movve his I.V. and other medical equipment with ease. Alex now had a room full of all the things he loves. Alex found a bone marrow match in a babies cord blood, and underwent the transplant. After almost two months in the hospital, Alex the Great, with his strength and courage, came home to his wonderful new space. He is doing very well today; he is almost 200 days post transplant and hopes to go back to school soon. Team Leader: Paula Carson |
